In October, 2014, a contest for high?鄄quality classes among high school English teachers in China was held in Sanya. Over 600 teachers including me from different regions participated in it. So I have written this essay to present my view on the phenomenon reflected in this contest and reflect over the problems to be solved in English teaching reform in China. Through this essay, I exchange with other teachers the three aspects: the present situation of English teaching in high schools, the drawbacks and strategies for English teaching reform.

I. The present situation of English teaching in high schools in China

1. The concept of communicative foreign language teaching has been identified. Participants had a clear purpose of communicative foreign language teaching, showing since the English teaching reform, its been coinciding with the tendency of foreign language teaching in the world.

2. The quality of English teachers in high schools has greatly been improved. Participants designed their teaching activities focusing on the language function and the ability of using the target language and considering the language structure, expressed in their new and original activities, student?鄄centered teaching activities and communicative classroom.

3. Career development of teachers is the popular concern and teaching research has been penetrating into classroom teaching. 600 teachers participated in the contest, but about 3000 person?鄄times enthusiastically viewed and emulated their classes, which is a good omen for the development of English classroom teaching in China.

In summary, from the perspective of this contest, English teaching in high schools in China has been greatly developing, which lays a solid foundation for improving the quality of foreign culture in China, thus saving time and increasing teaching and learning efficiency.

II. The drawbacks of English classroom teaching in high schools in China

1. Deviations exist in teaching awareness and conduct. Teaching awareness is the most important target, which determines teaching quality. But some participants teaching awareness wasnt completely equal to their teaching conduct, which produced the contradictory between teaching ideology and conduct and such a deviation is a great drawback for English classroom teaching.

2. The teaching theoretical level of teachers needs enhancing. The relationship between teaching theories and practice has been universally acknowledged in teachers education, but in China theories are divorced from practice, which was displayed in this contest, too. It reflects in China, the mainstream of education in normal universities and the in?鄄service training of high school teachers are only limited to technical training but ignore the training in theoretical quality.

3. The teachers competence in English isnt equal to their teaching level. In the contest the teachers competence in English was higher than their teaching level. However, when it comes to teaching, some still remain in antiquated patterns. Thus, students lack active participation in teaching activities. Considering these problems, Id like to make the following suggestions.

III. Strategies for promoting English teaching reform in China

1. Training of English teachers has become the most important issue of English reform. In recent years, foreign language teaching research in China has aroused great concern among teachers. But based on the present situation, to cultivate high?鄄quality teachers has become a problem which calls for a prompt solution. Meanwhile, teachers should enhance their teaching skills.

2. Chances for viewing and emulating classroom classes should be offered. Viewing and emulating classes is important for teachers introspection and self?鄄development, so it should be systematized and made a regular practice.

3. It is urgent to make teaching assessment more standard and scientific. As we all know, the implementation of teaching reform is restricted by teaching assessment. And the standard of teaching assessment influences teaching design and implementation. So the research about teaching assessment should be strengthened.

In conclusion, the success of this contest has proved the mainstream of English teaching reform in high schools in China should be confirmed and remarkable achievements have been made in it. Meanwhile, problems still exist and the education in normal universities and teachers and the on?鄄the?鄄job training should be emphasized.
